Postnatal and Perinatal Psychology

Becoming a parent can be one of the most profound transitions of your life — and also one of the most emotionally challenging. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, anxious, low, or unlike yourself during pregnancy or after having a baby, you’re not alone. Support is available.

I provide postnatal and perinatal psychology services on Brisbane’s Northside in Chermside and surrounds, supporting women and parents through pregnancy, the postpartum period, and early parenthood with compassion, evidence‑based care.

Support for Postnatal & Perinatal Mental Health

Perinatal mental health concerns can emerge during pregnancy or at any time in the first year (or longer) after birth. You don’t need to be at breaking point to seek help.

I commonly support clients experiencing:

  • Postnatal depression

  • Postpartum anxiety or panic

  • Intrusive or distressing thoughts

  • Birth trauma or difficult birth experiences

  • Adjustment difficulties after becoming a parent

  • Emotional overwhelm, irritability, or numbness

  • Grief following pregnancy loss or fertility challenges

  • Identity changes and loss of self after having a baby

Many parents I work with describe feeling guilty for not “enjoying every moment,” or worry that something is wrong with them. These experiences are far more common than most people realise.

What Postnatal Depression & Anxiety Can Look Like

Postnatal mental health difficulties don’t always look the way people expect. You may be functioning on the outside while struggling internally.

Common signs include:

  • Persistent low mood or tearfulness

  • Constant worry about your baby’s health or safety

  • Racing thoughts or difficulty switching off

  • Feeling emotionally disconnected from your baby or partner

  • Difficulty sleeping even when your baby sleeps

  • Fear of being judged or seen as a “bad parent”

If any of this resonates, early support can make a meaningful difference.

How Perinatal Psychology Can Help

Therapy provides a safe, non‑judgemental space to make sense of what you’re experiencing and develop practical strategies for coping.

My work is:

  • Trauma‑informed and compassionate

  • Evidence‑based, drawing on approaches such as CBT, ACT, and attachment‑informed therapy

  • Paced and collaborative, recognising how depleted new parents often feel

Sessions may focus on:

  • Reducing anxiety and low mood

  • Understanding your nervous system during postpartum

  • Processing birth or medical trauma

  • Managing intrusive thoughts

  • Supporting identity changes and self‑compassion

  • Strengthening emotional regulation during overwhelm

Postnatal and Perinatal Therapy

I work with clients across Brisbane and offer in‑person, telehealth and video psychology sessions. Telehealth can be particularly helpful during the postpartum period when leaving the house feels difficult.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or not like yourself since becoming a parent, support is available.

Sessions are tailored to your needs and stage of parenthood. You are welcome to bring your baby if required (where appropriate), and therapy is focused on being realistic and supportive — not adding another thing to your to‑do list. You don’t need to have the “right words” or a clear goal before starting. We work it out together.

Medicare, Referrals & Fees

You may be eligible for Medicare rebates with a Mental Health Care Plan from your GP. Private fee options are also available.

If you’re unsure whether anxiety therapy is right for you, or how referrals work, you’re welcome to get in touch.
